The town is situated in the heart of the Vendée, on a peninsula that extends into the Atlantic Ocean. It is located between Les Sables-d'Olonne and La Tranche-sur-Mer at about from each of these towns. Saint Gilles Croix de Vie has a total area of . The commune borders with La Faute sur Mer to its north, Le Pouliguen to its south and west, as well as with L'Île d'Yeu (a small island off France's western coast) to its east. Saint Gilles Croix de Vie has two main beaches: "La Grande Plage" ("the large beach") which stretches for over 2 km along an oceanic sand beach; and "La Petite Plage" ("the small beach"), which lies behind it on top of rocks overlooking lagoons filled by seawater during high tide periods but dry out at low tide periods allowing visitors access without getting their feet wet.
