About Biarritz

Biarritz is located in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques département. It is on the Atlantic coast at the western end of the Côte d'Argent (Silver Coast), named for its white sand beaches, which stretch from Biarritz to Hossegor. The city extends along a narrow strip of land between sea and mountain that forms a crescent around an old fishing port and resort, part of Bayonne-Anglet-Biarritz (BAB) urban area extending inland into southwestern France. The name "Biarritz" comes from 'Bayard Rock', referring to Saint Bayard, who legend says was shipwrecked there with his horse Mirabelle.[1] The town also has a strong Basque cultural background; even though it belongs historically to Gascony since becoming part of France in 1659 by Treaty of Pyrenees[2].
