The commune of Capesterre-Belle-Eau was created on 22 February 2003 by the division of the former commune of Capesterre into three parts: one part which became the new municipality called "Capesterre", and two other parts, namely "Capesterre-Belle-Eau" and "Petit Bourg". The name comes from a combination between capes (in French, meaning cape) as there are many in this area; and îles (islands), because there are also many islands around. The city is located at an average altitude of 20 meters above sea level. It is bordered to north by Petit Bourg, south with Gourbeyreau, east with Saint Louis and west with Pointe des Châteaux.
