Geography Lons-le-Saunier is located 96 km (60 mi) southeast of Dole. The Jura mountains begin some 10 km (6.2 mi) from the town, which is situated at an altitude of about 300 m (980 ft). The commune has an area of 23.88 square kilometres (9 sq mi), and its average elevation is 370 metres above sea level.[1] It lies in the middle of a vast plain drained by two small rivers: La Douix on the north side and La Tille on the south side, tributaries to Lake Neuchâtel.[2] The climate type here is semi-continental with certain mountain features; winters are cold but dry while summers are hot and humid with temperatures that often exceed 30 °C for several weeks during July–August; there can be violent thunderstorms as well as snowfall during this period..[3][4][5] All precipitation falls between October and May but more than half occurs from November to March.
