Vannes is located at the mouth of two rivers, the Marle and the Vincin. It is 450 km (280 mi) southwest of Paris in a straight line. The residents of Vannes are called Vannetais. Vitré (French pronunciation: [viʁe]) is a commune in the Ille-et-Vilaine department in Brittany in northwestern France, about 35 kilometres (22 miles) east by north from Rennes on Route nationale 12 which passes through it, as does another major road between Rennes and Redon via Pontivy to Lorient over an old stone bridge across river Vilaine built by Vauban during his military career before he became famous for building fortifications such as those at Louis XIV's palace at Versailles.[1] Inhabitants are called Vitréens or Vitréens(iès).
