About Brest

Brest is an important research centre, mainly focused on the sea. There are four universities in the city (University of Western Brittany, Brest Business School – IAE de Brest, École Navale and ENSTA Bretagne), three engineering schools (ENIEE - Institut national des études économiques et industrielles de Brest; ENSET - École nationale supérieure d'ingénieurs techniques; ENSTA Bretagne) and two professional colleges. The presence of these educational institutions has encouraged knowledge-intensive activities such as research and development or communication agencies. Among all the cities of France, Brest is also one of those where the most jobs in research and development are to be found: there were 2200 jobs related to R&D in 2009 for a total number employed inhabitants equal to 44% against a French average close to 3%.
