Saint-Chamond is located in the Massif Central, 13 km northeast of Saint-Étienne and 50 km southwest of Lyon. The town lies on the north bank of the River Rhône. It is bordered to its south by Montbrison and to its west by Marcenat. To its east, across a small valley, lies Le Breuil (commune). The commune has an area of 14 square kilometres with a median altitude above sea level at 132 metres; it extends from 115 metres in Izieux up to 548 m near Saint Martin en Coailleux where there are quarries producing stone for building construction (the "Pierre de Saint Chamond"). There are several hills including Mont Chauveau (516 m), which overlooks much of the town; this hill was once used as a fortification but now offers views over most parts of the city.
