The Urban Community of Lyon (French: "Communauté urbaine de Lyon") was the intercommunal structure gathering the city of Lyon and some of its suburbs. It was created on 1 January 2006 following a reform allowing urban communities to exist in France. It replaced the previous "Metropolis" which had been created in 1992, replacing four former districts ("arrondissements"). The Urban Community encompassed only half of Greater Lyon (the other half being part either of Métropole de l'Ain or Métropole Savoie Mont Blanc), with one-third each going to these two new structures. Its population totaled 2,843,159 inhabitants at the last census in 2013 and its president is Jean-Paul Bret since March 2014. In January 2015 it was merged into Metropolis Grand LYON along with Métropole de l'Ain et du Haut-Rhône and Communauté d'agglomération Valence Romans Agglo..
