The Fier forms part of the commune's border. The city lies in a basin, at the foot of Mont Semnoz, which is high. The surrounding area extends to Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) some away and has an elevation difference of . Neighbouring towns include Yvoire to the west on both banks of the lake, Voiron to the north and Le Grand-Bornand further east on its left bank. Annecy can be reached from Paris by TGV train in less than four hours (three direct trains per day). It is located south-east of Lyon and from Geneva; via Turin it is distant but not as close as other cities in southeastern France due to topography differences between northern Italy and southern France: for example Marseille () or Nice (). By road it takes approximately two hours from Paris (), one hour from Lyon (), 45 minutes from Chambéry () or 45 minutes form Grenoble ().
