Auvergne (French pronunciation: [o.vɛʁɲ]; Auvergnat: Auvèrnhe) is a former administrative region of France. Since 1 January 2016, it is part of the new region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. It comprises four departments: Allier, Puy-de-Dôme, Cantal and Haute Loire. The history of the Auvergne dates back to the early Middle Ages, when it was a historic province in south central France. This historical area today includes parts of the modern départements of Puy de Dôme and Cantal in mid central France; all three provinces are sometimes collectively referred to as "L'Auvergère".
