Alexandria is one of the most important tourist destinations in Egypt, owing to its large number of ancient Egyptian monuments and because it has been a major centre of Christianity since the early church. In addition to its archaeological and historical attractions, Alexandria has a lively nightlife that includes bars, restaurants, discothèques as well as nightclubs. Alexandria's Mediterranean climate makes it one of the warmest cities in Africa and Europe; with mild winters (rarely below ), very warm summers (highs around ) and low humidity. The site where Alexandria was founded has been occupied by settlements for at least 29000 years: excavations near Abu Qir Bay showed human occupation from at least 3950 BC; around 3000 BC there was a permanent village on what would become the Pharaonic quarter today called Rhakotis or Râkotis ().
