Santiago de los Caballeros is the home of the first cathedral, castle, monastery and fortress in all of the Americas. It was built in what was at that point called Hispaniola on top of a mountain by Juan de Bolaños d'Iriarte. The city's Cathedral (Catedral Santiago Apóstol) dates back to 1512; it has been destroyed twice due to earthquakes and hurricanes but rebuilt each time. The last church building standing today is from 1755; its façade remains unchanged since then because it was not affected during an earthquake which occurred on February 27th 1842 when much damage happened throughout Santo Domingo City including a major fire destroying many buildings around this area as well as other cities like Azua De Compostela and Baní among others .
