Holguín is located in the southeastern-most part of Cuba, near the Gulf of Guacanayabo. It lies on a plain 1,100 feet (340 m) above sea level and contains many hills and small mountains. The municipality borders with Mayarí and San Cristóbal in the north; Banes in the east; Yaguajay, Bayamo and Manzanillo en el Marquesado del Valle de Abra (municipality) to its south; Las Tunas Province to its west; Ciego de Ávila Province's Morón city area to its northwest across a bay called "Bahía de Cochinos" or Bay of Pigs by English speakers due to this event that happened there during 1961–1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.
