About Santiago de Cali

The city is the birthplace of many famous Colombians, including former President Alberto Lleras Camargo and Nobel Prize laureate Gabriel García Márquez. The city has a number of large shopping malls (including El Paseo de los Libertadores), parks, theaters and museums. It's also home to one of the largest universities in Colombia with more than 100 thousand students from all over the country; Universidad del Valle was founded in 1959 by José María Villa Uribe. Cali is called "La Ciudad de las Flores" ("City of Flowers") for its immense floral diversity that can be seen even in every neighborhood: palm trees, bougainvillea or hibiscus are some examples among hundreds which give a unique landscape to this part of South America.
