Xiamen is a sub-provincial city in southeastern Fujian, People's Republic of China. It borders Quanzhou City to the north and Zhangzhou City to the west; it also faces Kinmen County of Taiwan across the Taiwan Strait in its south. Its built up area made up of 3 urban districts was home to 1,998,501 inhabitants at the 2010 census spread over 6 municipalities (including Xiang'an district), Zhonghe District being one special economic zone and thus not part of any municipality).
