In 1975, the state was handed over to India and became a Union Territory. This led to massive protests by the local population and in 1986, Arunachal Pradesh was made India's 23rd state after a referendum. Arunachal Pradesh is one of two states in India with an ethnic majority (the other being Meghalaya). The people are culturally related to Tibetans; they speak Tibetan dialects as well as Hindi and English fluently. Many of them follow Buddhism while others practice traditional religions like Donyi-Poloism or Christianity along with Hinduism; there are also followers of Islam among some tribes such as Mishmis who live near Assam's border areas. There is also a small group called Bontia (or Bonda) tribe living inside Arunachala pradesh which speaks Bontio language unique only for this tribe .
