La Serena is a city in the Coquimbo Region, about north of Santiago. It has an area of . The commune spans both sides of the Elqui River. Its average elevation is , though there are some hills rising to around above sea level and reaching up to high at Cerro La Cruz Grande, which separates the city from Vicuña Mackenna Avenue. Other hills include Los Morros (The Mounds), Los Alisos (The Alder Trees), El Plomo and La Laja (the flat stone). According to data from 2012, there were 186,438 people residing within its administrative limits; however this figure does not include many residents living in surrounding areas who commute into town for work or study purposes as well as those living on rural properties outside urban limits but within its municipal jurisdiction. According to 2002 census figures it had 129,921 inhabitants making it one of Chile's largest cities by population although still smaller than regional capital Valparaíso with over 400 thousand inhabitants .
