Saskatoon is a major cultural and educational centre for southern Saskatchewan. The University of Saskatchewan, the Meewasin Valley Authority which protects the South Saskatchewan River and provides for public riverbank parks, Wanuskewin Heritage Park (a National Historic Site of Canada representing 6,000 years of First Nations history) are all located in or near Saskatoon. Several national museums can also be found in the city including: The Mendel Art Gallery opened on October 2, 2006 at 24th Street East and Avenue C. It features over 1500 works covering seven centuries from Renaissance to contemporary art by artists such as Rembrandt van Rijn; Edgar Degas; Claude Monet; Pablo Picasso; Henri Matisse among many others.
