The first settlers arrived in the area in 1810. The municipality is located on Lake Témiscouata, which flows into the Rivière du Nord, a tributary of the Saint Lawrence River. The city is located about north of Quebec City and south-east of Edmundston, New Brunswick. It has an area of . The population was 6,835 as at the 2011 census (Canada). Its municipal number changed from 5 to 8 after its amalgamation with Cabano on May 5th 2010; it became MRC number 8 when Notre-Dame-du-Lac joined them later that year.
