There are also two large lakes nearby, Lake Massawippi and Lac Magog. The name "Sherbrooke" comes from early settlers who came from the town Sherborne in England. In 1793, as part of the Treaty of Paris during the American Revolutionary War between Great Britain and revolutionary France following independence, a vast territory was ceded to Great Britain that included all land east of Longueuil including what is now Sherbrooke. The townships were laid out according to their distance from Montreal on a grid plan surveyed jointly by William Holland Wilbraham (1749–1827) and Sir Sandford Fleming (1827–1915).
