The population as of the Canada 2011 Census was 2,622. The city is named after Brigid of Kildare (Brigit), a Christian saint who founded an abbey in Ireland around 525 AD. The town's name was originally spelled "Sainte-Brigitte", but it has been written Sainte-Brigitte-de-Laval since 1845 to distinguish it from another Saint Brigid's church in Quebec City. In 2003, the Commission de toponymie du Québec recommended that this form be changed back to "Sainte-Brigitte" because there were other towns and cities with names ending with "-de Laval". However, on August 15th 2005, Quebec premier Jean Charest announced that he would refuse any change for now due to potential confusion between Sainte Bridget and St.
