The city was founded in 1671 by the Sulpician Order. It is located on the Saint-Lawrence River, near Quebec City and Montreal. The area around Saint-Hyacinthe is known as "the granary of Lower Canada" because of its many farms producing wheat and other grains. Saint-Hyacinthe's economy is based on agriculture (wheat, corn) as well as a growing technology sector that includes companies such as IBM, Xerox and Hewlett Packard Enterprise Services (HPE).
