The city was founded in 1964, constructed as a replacement for the pre-existing Mirabel Airport (built in 1950) which had been rendered obsolete by the construction of Montreal's Trudeau International Airport. The project was undertaken by SNC-Lavalin for the federal Department of Transport under John Turner. It is still known today as one of the largest engineering projects ever attempted in Canada and it remains an example of successful megaproject management on a scale rarely seen since its completion. Mirabel is located approximately northwest from downtown Montreal and sits adjacent to Montréal–Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport, Quebec Autoroute 15, Quebec Route 117 and Via Rail's "Ocean" line between Toronto/Montreal/Vancouver with connections via Amtrak at Chicago Union Station or New York City Penn Station to other points throughout North America including Boston South Station or Washington DC Union Station via New Haven CT & Philadelphia 30th Street station respectively .
