The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is the most populous metropolitan area in Canada. It consists of several census metropolitan areas (CMAs). Its land area is 9,653 km² (3,735 sq mi), encompassing a population of 5,928,040 people as of the 2016 census. The region stretches from Lake Simcoe in the north to near Hamilton and Niagara Falls in the south. Along with Greater Vancouver and Greater Montreal, it forms one of three "prism" cities on Canada's borders; its official name is "the Golden Horseshoe". A 2011 National Household Survey revealed that over half a million residents were born outside Ontario; about 25% were born elsewhere in Canada while another 65% are foreign-born immigrants who moved to Ontario from other countries since 2000.
