The first European settlement in York was established in 1793 by Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe. The village was named after Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany. In 1813, the new town of York (present-day Toronto) was founded to the west. The area's economy is diverse; it includes manufacturing, retailing, transportation and tourism sectors as well as a large public sector.
