Flamborough is a primarily rural area with the exception of Waterdown and Carlisle. The main industries in Flamborough are farming, manufacturing, and retail trade. The former town of Flamborough was amalgamated into Hamilton on January 1, 2001 as part of provincial government efforts to reduce the number of municipal governments in Ontario from 863 to 444 (and eventually down to current level). It is now represented by eleven councillors at large on city council plus one mayor representing all former municipalities within its boundaries.
