Waterloo started on land that was part of a parcel of 675,000 acres assigned in 1784 to the Iroquois alliance that made up the League of Six Nations. The rare gift by Britain's King George III was commemorated with the naming of Waterloo County, which included Brantford and Galt. The area includes three rivers: all three are tributaries to Lake Erie: Grand River, well known for its fishing; Conestogo River; and Speed River (Ontario). They form an important source for high quality potable water.
