In 2016, the city's population was estimated at 306,233. The city is part of the Hurontario-Main Street Corridor which has a population of approximately 7 million people. Vaughan, Ontario and Newmarket are together referred to as "The Vaughan Metropolitan Centre" by Statistics Canada; however this term does not appear on any municipal government websites or official documents produced by those governments. Neither municipalities' annual reports reference each other as neighbours in their market information sections (although they do refer to Aurora). Their tenuous relationship is officially recognized within the provincial legislation that created them: both were amalgamated into York Region on January 1, 1998 under the "York Regional Municipality Act", 1997 (1997 cY4) with a provincially appointed coordinating committee required to deliver joint planning and services for transportation infrastructure in what it describes as an integrated but separate relationship from neighbouring communities such as Richmond Hill or Markham Township which are also members of York Region but have no special status with respect to one another beyond being fellow members like all others within its borders.
