The town is located on the Ottawa River and was originally a stopover for travellers going to Montreal. It later became an important railway junction, with lines running north-south from Montreal to Kingston and east-west from Ottawa to Toronto. The rail line has since been abandoned but the Vankleek Hill Station still stands as a museum of local history. Vankleek Hill is home of Camp Fortune, one of Canada's premier year round family ski resorts which offers downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing (including night time), tubing hill & mountain biking in summer months along with many other activities such as golfing at nearby Le Domaine St-Charles Golf Club or fishing on Lake Deschenes just minutes away by car or boat launch off Highway 34/115 exit #7A (1 km south).
