Uxbridge was first settled in 1798 by Quakers who had been granted land there. The name is derived from the town of Uxbridge, England, where many of the settlers originated. It became a police village in 1853 and a town in 1874. It remained primarily agricultural until after World War II when residential development began to spread into the surrounding countryside from Oshawa and Toronto as part of suburban expansion leading to urban sprawl.
