The city is connected to the United States by two international bridges, the Peace Bridge and the Rainbow Bridge. The city is also home to an OHL team, a Major Junior A Hockey League team (the Niagara IceDogs), an Ontario Hockey Association major midget 'AAA' hockey franchise (the St. Catharines Falcons) and a Canadian Women's Hockey League franchise (the Buffalo Beauts). The City of Thorold was incorporated on January 1, 1998 when most of Thorold Township was amalgamated with Port Robinson Township into one municipality named after its largest settlement. It became part of Greater Toronto in 2001 upon completion of municipal restructuring in southern Ontario.
