The city is named after the lake and river of the same name, which in turn were named for a member of Samuel de Champlain's party who died during an expedition to find a route from New France to Lake Huron. The French word "temiskaming" means "where there are trees standing in water". In addition, Temiskaming Shores was formed by merging three towns: New Liskeard (founded 1873), Haileybury (1874) and Dymond Township (1908). These communities were each founded as mining towns. In particular, they grew up around gold mines operated by major companies such as Homestake Mining Company and Kirkland Lake Gold Mines Limited.
