Rockland is the seat of Prescott-Russell United Counties, and its largest town. It is also a major service centre for the eastern part of Ottawa Valley. The city has an area of 23 square kilometres (8 sq mi) and a population density was 1,741/km2 in 2006.[1] History [ edit ] The first settlers arrived in 1810 from New England; they were joined by Scottish immigrants who settled on lots along both sides of the Petite-Nation River beginning around 1830.[3] In 1851, John MacDonald built his home here which still stands today at 605 Stirling Avenue East. He named it "Clarence Villa" after Prince Albert's third son who later became King Edward VII[4]. Clarenceville was founded as a village in 1850 when most residents lived within about one kilometre (0.
