Moose Factory Island is the largest island in James Bay. It was named after the Moose River, which flows into James Bay at its southern end. The river's name comes from an Algonquian word meaning "where one gets moose". The Cree called it E-chee-dick (pronounced "Eshkid"), meaning "island of fish", and this name was used by French explorers for a time before they adopted the English term.
