Kingston was named the first capital of the United Province of Canada on February 10, 1841. While its time as a capital city was short (ending in 1844), the community has remained an important military installation. The city is home to two universities, several colleges and a large trades school; it also has one of Ontario's major regional hospitals. Kingston is known as "The Limestone City" because many buildings are constructed using local limestone.
