The county was constituted in 1859. It was named for the Huron First Nation, who were one of the original Five Nations that make up the Iroquois Confederacy or "Haudenosaunee". The word "Huron" is derived from either French ""hure"", meaning rough hair (from Old French), or directly from a Wyandot pronunciation of their endonym, "Horoni". In 2011, Huron County had a population of 61,895 living in an area of 3227.56 square kilometres. There were 23 municipalities and townships with populations greater than 1000: Goderich (7648); Clinton (5674); Seaforth Township(4999) Wingham Township(4029) Tuckersmith Township(3738).
