The Hamilton area was first settled when Paleo-Indians migrated from northeastern North America after 8000 BCE. Before the Europeans arrived, most of what is now Hamilton was part of the Huron (Wyandot) territory, with small populations of Iroquois and Neutral peoples clustered along the southern shores of Lake Ontario. A French agricultural settlement was established at Coteau-du-Lac in 1749; it is currently known as Stoney Creek. The British conquered present day Hamilton in 1774 during the American Revolutionary War and soon after began a dispute with Upper Canada over rights to certain areas following their victory at Yorktown against France that ended in 1814 through an agreement known as "The Treaty Of Ghent".
