In 2018, Guelph was named the safest city in Canada for the fourth year in a row. The University of Guelph is an institution with a history going back to 1874 when Ontario Legislative Assembly passed an act to establish King's College at Kingston. The non-denominational school developed from an initial endowment by John Galt, the founder of Guelph who also founded "Galt" (now Cambridge) and helped build much of early Toronto which still bears his name. The Macdonald Institute would also be renamed as the Galt Institute for its founder's contributions; it would develop numerous international leaders including Lester B. Pearson who received his MSc there in 1928 before going on to become Prime Minister and winning two Nobel Peace Prizes among other accomplishments during his career as diplomat and statesman; he served as Chancellor from 1948 until 1957 after retiring from politics due to health reasons stemming from being paralyzed while playing hockey with friends several years earlier while serving as Ambassador Extraordinary & Plenipotentiary at NATO headquarters near Paris France .
