About Fergus

The Township is governed by a Mayor and six Councillors.The town was named after Fergus, the legendary first king of Scotland. The name was adopted in 1853 when the Grand Trunk Railway built its line through what would become Fergus Station (now downtown). It became an incorporated village in 1858, and a town on January 1, 1901 with a population of 3100 people.Fergus has been home to many industries over time including: manufacturing plants for agricultural implements; breweries; distilleries; tanneries; sawmills and furniture factories as well as other light industry such as clothing manufacturers or food processors/packagers.Today's economy is more diverse than ever before but still includes some manufacturing jobs like those at Sealed Air Corporation's plant where they manufacture Bubble Wrap® products for shipping purposes or at Rheem Canada Inc., which manufactures water heaters there since 1973.[citation needed] Other major employers include Walmart Canada Corp., Cargill Meats Solutions (formerly Lakeside Packers), Sysco Foods Ontario Ltd.
