Chatham-Kent is bordered by Lake St. Clair and Detroit, Michigan to the north; Windsor, Essex County and Leamington to the east; London to the southeast; Lambton County (including Sarnia) and Sarnia to the south. Chatham-Kent is located approximately halfway between Toronto and Detroit along highway 401. The name "Chatham" originates from its location at a point on a long bay of Lake Erie that narrows like an hourglass: it was named after William Pitt's home town of Chatham in Kent, England. The city itself was founded as part of colonial settlement with Loyalists who fled post American Revolution United States for British North America following defeat at Yorktown in 1781 during which time they were known as United Empire Loyalists or King's Royal Yorkers prior their arrival in Canada due their service under Lieutenant General Sir John Burgoyne KCB KCVO PC FRS (1722–1792).
