The municipality is named after the two communities that were amalgamated to form it: Charlton and Dack. The name "Charlton" was chosen because of its association with Sir John A. Macdonald, Canada's first Prime Minister, who lived there as a child for several years while his father worked on the construction of the Rideau Canal; he later returned to live in Charlton during his retirement from politics. The name "Dack" comes from an early settler family whose surname was originally spelled 'Deacon'.
