The city is bounded on the south by Waterloo, Ontario and Kitchener, Ontario; on the west by Woolwich Township; on the north by North Dumfries Township and Wellesley Township. The main river in Cambridge is the Speed River which flows from Lake Erie at Port Maitland (now part of St. Catharines), to Georgian Bay at Port Ryerse. The Grand River flows through Galt, Preston and Hespeler; it also forms part of Cambridge's western boundary with Kitchener. The name "Cambridge" was chosen as a compromise among competing proposals reflecting its location: in 1857 there were four settlements that eventually amalgamated into today's City of Cambridge: Oughterson Creek (Galt); Parkersville (Preston); Harrisons Landing & Blair Road/Willow Avenue West-Hillsdale(Hespeler)and Burford Bridge & Mill Dam(Blair).
