About Burlington
Burlington lies between Lake Ontario and the Niagara Escarpment. Economically, Burlington is strategically located near the centre of Canada's Golden Horseshoe. By the time land beside the bay was deeded to Captain Joseph Brant at the turn of 19th century, a settlement had begun to form around it. In 1814, however, United Empire Loyalists were given land grants by Britain in Upper Canada and other areas; many settled on nearby farms in Burlington or came into town from their new settlements for supplies essential during wartime (e.g., blacksmithing).
