The town was named after John Bowman, a settler who arrived in 1817 and built a sawmill. The town's motto is "A Great Place to Grow". In the late 19th century, Bowmanville became an important railway junction with several lines crossing there. This led to its growth as an industrial centre for the region. In recent years it has become more of a bedroom community for nearby Toronto and Oshawa (the latter being part of the Greater Toronto Area).
