About Truro

Truro is the largest town in Colchester County, with a population of 10,743 (2016 census). The Truro area is also home to four First Nations reserves. The origin of the name "Truro" comes from the Cornish word "tre-frow", meaning 'town on three rivers'. It was named by Captain Cyprian Southack in honour of his native Cornwall's chief port and cathedral city, Truro. In 1815 it was renamed New Edinburgh after Sir Walter Scott's novel Old Mortality made Edinburgh popular again; however this lasted only until 1819 when it reverted to its original name.
