About Sydney
The area was named after the Scottish town of Sydney, in honour of Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney (1683–1764), who was a British cabinet minister and leader of the House of Commons from 1733 to 1738. The name "Sydney" comes from an English spelling variation for "Thomas", itself derived from Old English: , meaning 'twin'. The first French expedition to Cape Breton Island led by Jean-Baptiste Nicolas Roch de Ramezay arrived on 10 June 1629 at Port-Royal. After spending several days looking for a suitable site, they moved across the harbour on 19 June 1629 and built their first fortification near where present day St.
