The area was named after the Scottish town of Sydney, in honour of Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney (1683–1764), who was a British cabinet minister and leader of the House of Commons from 1733 to 1738. The name "Sydney" comes from an English spelling variation for "Thomas", itself derived from Old English: , meaning 'twin'.
