Dartmouth is part of the economic centre of the Halifax Regional Municipality. The city's economy is based on government services, retail trade, construction and professional services. Dartmouth has been ranked as having one of the highest concentrations of low income residents among all Canadian cities; however, it also ranks high in terms of average income per capita at $28 905 (as compared to a national average at $21 563). The unemployment rate in Dartmouth between September 2007 and May 2008 was 14.7%. This compares with a Nova Scotia unemployment rate for that time period of 12%, an Atlantic Canada rate 11% and a national average 10%. The population density per square kilometre within municipal boundaries is 1,200-1,300 people/km² (3100-3300 people/sq mi).
