Antigonish is the county seat of Antigonish County. The town was incorporated in 1874 and named for the ancient Greek city-state of Antigonia, which derived its name from King Antiochus. The population according to Statistics Canada as of 2011 was 4,788; however, this number does not include a large First Nations reserve adjacent to the town's municipal boundaries (the Sipekne'katik First Nation).
