About Amherst

The town is home to the Nova Scotia Community College, a campus of Dalhousie University. The area was first settled by Europeans in 1772 as part of the colony of New Brunswick. It became part of Nova Scotia in 1867 and an incorporated township in 1890 named after Amherst Island (which it faces across Cumberland Basin). In 1899, Amherst became a city and grew rapidly due to its position at the head of navigation on the Bay de Verde Peninsula for exporting coal from mines located there. The city was once considered as being within Canada's Silicon Valley because it had large plants producing semi-conductors and other high-tech products such as electronic warfare systems for NATO countries during World War II; however most have closed since then with only one remaining today (see below).
