The city is named after the geographic feature of the same name, which rises to a height of above sea level. The city itself covers an area of . Mount Pearl is located on land originally granted by Charles II in 1661 to Sir Thomas Temple and his heirs. It was first settled in 1775 by Ezekiel Holwell and other United Empire Loyalists who left New Brunswick following its transfer from British to American control as part of the Treaty Of Paris (1763). In 1814 it was renamed "Ferryland" when incorporated as a town; this name remained until 1921, when it was renamed Mount Pearl.
